Make sure to feed regularly when the plant is in active growth and always allow the water to drain out of the bottom of the pot, never let them sit in water for too long.

Soil medium :
SOH enjoy a free draining and airy compost. Mix fine compost with grit or perlite to allow good drainage.

Light :
SOH require high light levels, but shade from hot direct sun. If light levels become to low, the leaves will turn pale become stretched out long the stems.
The variegated variety require higher levels of sunlight to bring out the variegation.

Propagation :
SOH grow from small tubers, these can be divided to create new plants.
New tubers often grow from nodes on the plants stems, these can be carefully removed and re potted.
Another method is by placing cut off strings in water for a few weeks where they will root.
